Your Two Choices

Picture this:

Dad: “David, get off the couch. Turn that TV OFF NOW! You’ve got two choices. Get a job or get out of my house? The choice is yours!”

He walked out of the room.

Although I was completely blindsided, I knew my father meant business and I had to choose quickly.

What happened next?

I called my buddy and gave him the creative version of how unfair my dad was being. Cooler heads prevailed and he took me to see his dad.

Seeing the desperation in my eyes his dad took pity on me and helped me get a job working in his billiard store.

Boy did I hate sweeping floors and picking up trash. But it was a start. And my dad let me continue to live under his roof.

Now that I think back on it, the choice wasn’t really that tough. But at the time I struggled with what to do.

Fortunately for me that simple “motivational” talk from my father provided me a much needed kick in the pants.
